Kayla here! October is my most favorite month of the year for many reasons: First: PSL (See my first official post to find a fabulous + healthy recipe for this) Second: My Birthday (Oh HELLOOOO TWENTY SIX) Third: Celebrating phenomenal women who have conquered breast cancer! We all have a family member/ friend / friend of a friend who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. This statement breaks my heart. Go ahead. Read it again and take a moment. This startling statement can be followed up with statistics from across the globe; Statistics such as in 2013 there were 39,620-breast cancer caused deaths in the U.S. alone (American Cancer Society). The question we must all begin to ask ourselves is this: What are we doing NOW to reduce this number? There are many ways we can reduce our risks for breast cancer, and although there is no cure, we can still be proactive. Here are my three favorite prevention action items: ![]()
[1.] Exercise: Physical activity has proven to reduce the risk of breast cancer in all body types. For many of us, hard working women, the thought of going to the gym everyday is laughable if not a complete joke altogether. Let’s face it- we have jobs, families, and awesome friends that take up our sweet time! Who could find the time to be active?! I hear ya. I have news for you though: You can do it. Science shows us time and time again that even small spurts of physical activity throughout the day will add up to a benefitting amount of exercise. (Pause while we all get up and walk around for 5 minutes). ![]()
[2.] Drinking More Water: The human body is made up of 60% water. Weird. I know. Each tiny little cell in our skin, muscles, bones, and entire body must have water to function. When I think about that, I instantly want to drink more water to make sure those cells stay as healthy as I am! Drinking water will help in keeping those cells hydrated and functioning. ![]()
[3.] Regular Check Ups: Okay. When you read that, you roll your eyes and think… Great. Another appointment, another afternoon to take PTO for something not so fun, and another doctor. I do too. I personally used to find appointments like this to be trivial, until a sweet friend of mine had her annual check up and found a lump. {you read that correct} She did not even know she had it, at 25 she was looking at potential breast cancer. That. Is. Scary. Luckily, because my sweet friend had her regular check up, she was able to have the lump removed and is doing just fine! What are your favorite breast cancer prevention tools?
