Hello + H A P P Y Wednesday!

It is seeming to be, that this {school} year, Wednesday is my favorite day of the week! I'm simply not a Monday kind of gal, and Tuesday looks like this- teach all day : faculty meeting : {quick} stop by the coffee shop : babysitting job :  grab {quick} dinner : bed. So Wednesday's have been feeling like the first day I get to come up for air since the weekend.

AND now that I've started this new little #OnWednesdayWeWearArt series, I am even more excited when Wednesday's roll around. Today we will be talking about post war ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST//COLOR FIELD painter MARK ROTHKO- the original//GodFather of the color block 'trend' .

Mark Rothko was born Markus Rothkowitz in 1903 in {then} Russia {now Latvia} and moved to the USA with his family when he was 10 years old. He was very intelligent and received a scholarship to Yale, but later dropped out- because he felt a 'misfit' and never completed his degree. Rothko was a painter who had the brilliant ability to say so much, with so little.

Now, before we start a conversation about his art, let me say that when I was a college freshmen, in my first {of many} art history courses, I totally rolled my eyes when my professor told us she was 'moved to tears' when viewing one of his paintings, because she was so overwhelmed by the emotion the colors evoked + the massiveness of the canvas. To say the least, I was un-impressed. YEARS, later and after falling in love with color//color theory I could possibly rank Rothko amongst my favorite of artist.

Being able to mix//layer colors be it on the canvas with paint, or on your body with clothes- can be a tricky thing. Rothko's paintings consisted of large layers of fussy patches of pigment. Rothko was interested in getting in touch with peoples emotions, and he believed that color had a large impact on ones emotions. He said painting these works put him in a meditative state of mine, and hoped to evoke those same types of feelings on to its viewer. The longer you look, and the closer you pay attention, the more you start to see the sublet difference in the brush strokes on the canvas.

Rothko, as many artist {of this time}- struggled with alcoholism and as his life progressed his paintings became darker and darker. Some believe that he feared he had built up his art work too much and that he would never really be able to live up to that momentum. People are naturally their worst critic, but artist are a different breed. We have a deep love//hate relationship with our work sometimes and it most certainly can take you on an emotional roller coaster.

I have actually been fortunate enough to see a few of his paintings through out the years. Like I said earlier, my opinions have been swayed since since freshman year, NOW I am a fan.

What about you? I want to hear what you think. Do you like his work? Do you think it bogus? Know anything interesting about Mark Rothko? Please, get a conversation started in our comment section below + Ill be sure to respond!
