Happy Wednesday! My favorite day of the [work week- well other than Friday ;P] because #OnWednesdayWeWearArt ! This weeks outfit was super last minute, like 10pm at night- 'ahhh what am I going to wear/when am I going to have time to take pictures and where at?!' So I had this brilliant idea to use two of my favorite materials and just keep it simple. Less is more. I busted out the shrinky dinks, made this necklace + grabbed some construction paper and started cutting out paper pieces for the wall, as a back drop! Simple + beautiful + colorful...I honestly think this maybe my favorite #OnWednesdayWeWearArt post yet. I am sure it could have been done a bit better, as it was extremely rushed- but I am so happy with the necklace/post! Now lets talk about our artist, Henri Matisse! He was a french artist- drawer, painter, print-maker and sculptor. But just like a few other artist we have talked about, he got his beginnings elsewhere. After college, Matisse got a job at a law office and shortly after passed the bar. Not long there after that, he fell ill of appendicitis and was bed ridden for TWO years. This is when he took up painting. His mother encouraged him to 'not listen to the art rules' - but rather respond to his emotions when painting. In response to the paints + encouragement his mother gave him while sick : "From the moment I held the box of colors in my hands, I knew this was my life. I threw myself into it like a beast that plunges towards something it loves.'" Henri Matisse mastered the expressive language of color, and was a leader in modern art. As you can see from the samples of his work that I have shown you here, he had a variety of ways of working- which I think, is what I love most about him. AND he was really good at all the medias he chose to work in. You can see in the flower painting above how complex + rich his work can be, as well as with the lithograph + paper cut outs how simple + powerful his other ways of working can be. Psst! : Don't forget to check out my blogging buddy Liv, as we have now teamed up for the #OnWednesdayWeWearArt post . She seriously is such a billantly, colorful soul who has a way with words, that I'm not sure that she realizes. See what she has to say this week about Henri Matisse + How she let his art inspire her outfit this week!
