Happy Wednesday, Happy first day of October [one of the best months of the year- here in GA], and most importantly HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my MOMMA!!! Hi Mom + Love you + have the best day! So you know- on Wednesday we wear art, and this week's inspiration is the painting 'American Gothic' by artist Grant Wood. Who actually didn't even have a background in painting. He went to The Art Institute of Chicago for silver smithing//metal work. But when he saw a 'call to artist' competition at the school, he entered this painting and won a bronze metal + 300 dollars! Soon there after, the painting ended up in the news papers and became famous over night. Many believed that Grant Wood was taking a jab + making fun of middle America with this painting because of the subjects sinister look. However, his intensions were just the opposite. American Gothic was painted around the time of the great depression. Wood had an appreciation of midwestern traditions + culture. He wanted to paint a picture that would represent the survivors [of the depression] as a portrayal of the American Spirit. However, people were so up set about this representation of America that Wood even received death threats over this work of art. Once The Art Institute of Chicago saw the reaction it provoked from people they decided they needed to add it to their own collection. AIC purchased the painting from Wood shortly after the art contest + housed it in their permanent collection- where it still lives today. The other super interesting thing about this painting is that most people assume that it is a man + wife on a farm somewhere in middle America. When actually, the man in the painting was his DENTIST- who he asked to pose for him to paint and the lady is actually his sister. Each part of the painting was painted individually + at different times. I personally LOVE wearing overalls, so I was having a hard time deciding what to wear for this week. I was trying to decide which outfit inspired me the most, so I just went with both! These looks are kind of 'Gothic' but it goes with the theme. AND I am realizing now, that with my bright blonde hair I am actually liking to wear black a lot more. Let me know which outfit inspires you//you like best in the comments section below!
