Hi Friends, If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, then you may know that yesterday was my birthday! And it was the most wonderful day! Birthdays when you ‘get old’ AKA : have to go to work can just seem like another mundane day. But that was not the case this year. First thing in the morning at my school, they announced that is was ‘Ms. Pilgrim’s 18th birthday!’ [I’m the youngest person on staff, so this is a joke every year] so my students spent the rest of the day wishing me a happy birthday and asking me why I wasn’t in high school!? haha For today’s #OnWednesdaysWeWearArt post my inspiration is artistJean-Michel Basquiat. He was an artist, musician and poet prodigy from New York City. He came to popularity in the late 1970’s early 1980’s and ran with artist and performers such as Andy Warhol and Madonna. He was a youngin’.He started out as a street artist, going by the tag name of Samo. But by the age of 20 he mastered his signature primitive style of painting- which consisted of obsessive scribbling, symbols, diagrams, skulls and ‘mask’ like imagery. By looking at his art work you can tell that he was a very expressive guy. I’ve chosen some of his more colorful works to post here, as [naturally] that is what I am drawn to. However, if you take a look at my Pinterest board, or do a google search- you will see he was a rather ‘troubled’ individual. Not that he caused trouble. It just seems as though he was a very deep/profound person with strong feelings. Art was his medium to express them. Art and partying that is. He unfortunately got caught up in the wrong scene, and drug over dosed before he even reached his prime. In his short time though, he left us with a vast collection of work that you can get lost in trying to connect with/understand. In true Courtney fashion, and the fact that it was my birthday this week- I wanted to do something fun for this week’s post. I originally had something special planned, but will have to do that another time. So I thought that an expressive artist like Basquiat would be fun, so I tried to find my most expressive and fun outfit to go along with :) I think Basquiat would agree that he likes to ‘Arty Hard’ too!
