Hey gals + Happy Wednesday! And you know what that means… #OnWednesdaysWeWearArt !!! This week’s outfit is inspired by the French impressionist artist Henri Rousseau [<--click to see my Pinterest board]. Although, when researching him- I saw him listed as a surrealist too…but in my professional opinion that doesn’t seem right either. I really enjoy Rousseau’s work, [my students do too- they love the man ridding the tiger!] and have actually had a print of his hanging in my apartment for years. Rousseau was just a normal guy, who lived a very modest + humble life. He was not formally trained as an artist and despite the fact that many of his paintings are jungle themed, he never even traveled outside of France. The inspiration for his paintings came from illustrated books and from visits to the botanical gardens in France. Haters Go’n Hate! Unfortunately, Rousseau’s work [like the stigma] wasn’t ever fully appreciated and recognized in his life time. Don’t get me wrong, there were a handful of folk [one being Pablo Picasso] who did recognize his ingenious style of painting but many ridiculed him and his child like style of painting. Calling him the naive painter, who used flat color and shapes. I honestly think that is why his work has always resonated with me- its sweet, innocent- child like. Even a tiger looks friendly enough, that you would want to get a piggy back ride from him! I think his peers hated on him because he was doing something different, not quite seen before. So since he didn’t fit into a box, there was no room for him. And we all know now- that just simply wasn’t the truth, Rousseau was just a leader- ahead of his time. My Rousseau Look |
